As this often depends on different factors, giving just one answer is difficult. But looking from an SEO and user-oriented perspective, there is a rule of thumb you can follow. We advise writing more than 300 words for posts or pages, while product descriptions should be over 200 words. Why? Because a higher word count helps Google understand what your text is about. They are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/what-is-cornerstone-content\/\">cornerstone content,&nbsp;<\/a>and they help our organic traffic grow. Here\u2019s how longer articles contribute to SEO:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When your text is longer, Google has more indicators to determine what it is about. The longer your text, the more often your focus keyphrase will probably appear. This is no excuse for keyphrase stuffing, though! If you optimize your copy naturally, your focus keyphrase will pop up here and there throughout your text. You can also fit in more&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/synonyms-related-word-forms-premium\/\">synonyms and related keyphrases<\/a>. What\u2019s more, in a longer post, you can add more&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/how-to-use-headings-on-your-site\/\">headings<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/internal-linking-for-seo-why-and-how\/\">links<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/image-seo\/\">images<\/a>, where you will mention the keyphrase or related phrases. So, more content gives you more room to provide users with high-quality and nuanced information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A longer text can also help you rank for multiple&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/focus-on-long-tail-keywords\/\">long-tail variants<\/a>&nbsp;of the keyphrase you\u2019ve optimized your text for. That\u2019s because you have more opportunities to address various topics in a lengthy text. Your article, or your other posts that take a deep dive into the subtopic, will have a chance to turn up in search results for the long-tail variants of your keyphrase. If you do some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/internal-linking-for-seo-why-and-how\/\">well-thought-out internal linking<\/a>&nbsp;you can even boost the traffic to the extensive post you\u2019ve written. This helps you drive more organic traffic to your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avoid having thin content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, if a page doesn\u2019t have a lot of text (a low word count), Google is more likely to think of it as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/what-is-thin-content\/\">thin content<\/a>. All search engines want to provide the best answers to online searches people do. Thin content is less likely to offer a complete answer and satisfy the needs of the public. Consequently, it will probably not rank very high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same goes for product pages and descriptions in your online store. While these don\u2019t have to be as long as blog posts, it is a good idea to make sure the text is long enough. Don\u2019t underestimate the importance of having the proper information on your products.
